Senior Staff Association Of Universities Of Ghana Declares Strike Effective Sept. 16

The Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana has announced a nationwide strike due to unresolved issues regarding their working conditions. This decision follows the government’s failure to address their demands for improved service conditions despite numerous protests and negotiations. Starting Monday, September 16, 2024, members of the association will withdraw their services from all public universities across the country.

The association, led by National Chairman George Ansong, claims the government did not meet the September 16 deadline to implement agreed-upon improvements. Specifically, they highlight the government’s failure to adjust vehicle maintenance and related allowances, release tier 2 pension deductions to fund managers since January 2024, and recalculate pension interest from 2010 to 2016.

Earlier this year, in January 2024, the association, along with other university worker unions, engaged in a nationwide strike over these demands but suspended it after receiving a government commitment to fulfill the agreements. Now, all administrative offices, libraries, hospital facilities, and security services at public universities will be shut down starting September 16. The national leadership has stated that they will not end the strike until their demands are fully met.
