Ato Kyinam, a young man in his early 30s, was fatally shot by an unidentified assailant on Friday in Mankessim during rituals marking the start of the Odambea Festival in the Nkusukum Traditional Area. The festival, celebrated across 20 communities, including Yamoransa, Biriwa, and Saltpond, has faced disruptions due to ongoing chieftaincy disputes.
In July, Okogyeman Okese Essandoh IX, the Omanhen of the Nkusukum Traditional Area, re-launched the festival at Yamoransa, establishing a planning committee for next year’s 50th-anniversary celebrations, symbolized by a new logo featuring an eagle.
Eyewitnesses reported that during the ritual procession with a bull, tensions flared when a group involved in the chieftaincy disputes obstructed the path, leading to a violent altercation and the tragic shooting. Police on the scene declined to comment on the incident.
