The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has carried out a pre-election simulation, “Exercise Stay Safe,” aimed at assessing and bolstering its readiness for potential crises during the upcoming general election. This Simulation is designed to enhance stakeholder capacity, improve coordination, identify weaknesses in crisis management, and establish robust systems to mitigate any election-related issues.
The Simulation was Conducted in partnership with the World Food Programme (WFP), and the exercise took place in three critical regions—Northern, Greater Accra, and Ashanti—yesterday. It involved realistic election scenarios featuring simulated crises to test response strategies, providing valuable insights to refine NADMO’s preparedness and collaboration with other agencies.
Seji Saji, Deputy Director-General of NADMO, noted that while Ghana has generally set a positive example in the sub-region for conducting peaceful elections and ensuring smooth power transitions, recent regional events underscore the need for thorough preparation to address any potential fallout.
Anna Mukiibi-Bunaya, Deputy Country Director for WFP, praised NADMO and its partners for their commitment to fostering a secure environment as the country approaches its presidential and parliamentary elections. She emphasized that elections are complex processes requiring comprehensive planning and coordination at all societal levels.
This year, the UN’s approach to the elections is more measured, partly due to the absence of a formal National Assessment Mission (NAM), which has limited its involvement. However, the UN has identified key areas to support national efforts, including peace processes, countering hate speech and misinformation, and ensuring the safety of journalists.
