Retaliating against suggestions for a temporary ban on small-scale mining is the Ghana National Association of Small-Scale Miners (GNASSM). As steps are taken to address unlawful small-scale mining, sometimes known as galamsey, several groups are pushing the government to outlaw the practice. Once again, the activities of galamseyers have contaminated important rivers and water bodies, putting pressure on the government to address illicit small-scale mining.
These illegal miners have also ruined hundreds of acres of farmlands, endangering Ghana’s food security. However, the Ghana National Association of Small-Scale Miners (GNASSM), whose members hold licenses from the Minerals Commission, thinks that identifying and prosecuting those involved in illicit mining that devastates the environment is a better course of action than outright banning small-scale mining.
