President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has been called by the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) and a number of other health unions and associations to immediately outlaw all small-scale mining operations, whether they are legal or not. This call is in response to the growing devastation of the country’s rivers and lakes and forest reserves, as well as the grave risks to public health and the environment posed by people and groups engaged in galamsey, or illegal mining.
The GMA, the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), the Government and Hospital Pharmacists Association (GHOSPA), and the Health Services Workers Union of Ghana (TUC) are among the unions and associations submitting this petition. The groups published a statement on Friday alerting people to Ghana’s impending environmental disaster, which would seriously jeopardise the nation’s citizen’s health, future, and well-being if left unchecked.
