The Supreme Court has granted a seven-day extension for the lawyers representing the Speaker of Parliament to file their statement of defense in the ongoing Richard Sky lawsuit challenging the anti-LGBTQ+ bill. The Speaker and the Attorney General missed the initial deadline for their submissions.
During the proceedings, Raphael Banaangman, the Speaker’s lawyer, argued that the delay was not a sign of disrespect to the court and urged the justices not to penalize his client for the oversight. Meanwhile, the Attorney General’s office stated that they would submit their defense only after Parliament completes a fiscal impact analysis of the bill.
Richard Sky’s legal team did not oppose the extension request but clarified that they were not responsible for the delays in the case. After the court’s decision, Paa Kwesi Abaidoo, representing Sky, emphasized that the plaintiffs could only file their memoranda of issues once the defendants had submitted their defenses.
Abaidoo reiterated that the plaintiffs should not be blamed for the delays, highlighting that the Supreme Court had previously upheld his argument that the plaintiffs cannot outline issues until the defendants present their statements.
