Springfield starts the Afina Well assessment.

Springfield Exploration and Production Limited (SEP) has initiated the appraisal of the Afina-1x Well in the West Cape Three Points (WCTP) Block 2, offshore Ghana. This move comes just three months after an international tribunal directed the government to allow Springfield to continue work on the Afina-Sankofa unitisation project.

The Deepsea Bollsta offshore rig, contracted from the Norwegian company Northern Ocean, arrived at the Afina field on Thursday, October 17, 2024. The rig’s arrival signals the start of operations, demonstrating Springfield’s determination to fulfill its commitment to appraise the Afina-1x well within the tribunal’s timeline, solidifying its position as a strong Ghanaian player in the deepwater oil sector.

Springfield has invested over $60 million in this well test and appraisal, a significant achievement for an indigenous company. The tribunal’s ruling on July 8, 2024, which involved the government’s unitisation directive for Eni Ghana Exploration and Production and Vitol Energy, confirmed the government’s right to enforce the directive. However, it mandated additional work to finalize the unitisation. The tribunal gave a six-month timeframe for completion once the required tasks were done. Springfield acknowledged the ruling and committed to following the directives.

CEO of Springfield, Kevin Okyere, emphasized the company’s resilience and dedication to success, describing the appraisal process as a testament to their determination. He highlighted that Springfield has built a team of industry experts with over 60 years of combined experience working for major oil companies globally. This, he said, enables the company to operate with the same level of professionalism as larger players, while also making swift decisions for the benefit of stakeholders, including the government and people of Ghana.

One of the major challenges in the oil and gas industry, Okyere pointed out, is securing an efficient rig. Springfield, however, managed to contract the highly reputable Deepsea Bollsta, even in the midst of high demand, where rigs are typically unavailable for at least a year. Despite these industry-wide difficulties, Springfield has successfully initiated operations within three months of the tribunal’s decision.

Okyere expressed optimism about the outcome of the Afina-1x appraisal, stating that the data they have is promising. He assured that the team is now focused on confirming those positive results.
