By the end of August 2024, Elon Musk’s Starlink internet service is scheduled to launch in Ghana. Following the completion of all administrative and licensing requirements by the National Communications Authority (NCA), Starlink was able to launch its high-speed internet services across the country. Prior to the most recent approval in Ghana, consumers could get over local Starlink restrictions and sign up for its international roaming service on the black market.
The NCA verified today that Space X Starlink GH LTD, an affiliate of Musk’s SpaceX, will oversee the service. Utilizing a constellation of low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites, Starlink’s technology allows for higher internet speeds than traditional satellites, making it a formidable contender in the global internet market. With 5,800 low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites as of April 2024, the network can effectively relay signals and offer download rates up to 100 Mbps in some locations.
Despite the promise of high-speed connectivity, Starlink’s cost may be a hurdle for many Ghanaians. In Nigeria, for instance, Starlink’s monthly subscription is priced at $27, with an initial setup cost of $314—significantly more expensive than local services like Airtel, which offers 1GB of data for $0.68. While Starlink’s service could be particularly beneficial for rural areas with limited internet access, the high cost might restrict its adoption among Ghana’s rural population, who may find the service unaffordable.
