Organised Labour Threatens Strike If Illegal Mining Is Not Banned By Sept. 30

The Organised Labour leadership led by the Trades Union Congress (TUC) has warned that they will initiate a nationwide strike if the government does not prohibit all galamsey operations by September 30.

During a press conference held in Accra on September 11, they expressed their determination to persist until the President stops all mining activities. Additionally, Labour suggested the establishment of a dedicated court to trial and prosecutes all individuals involved in galamsey. They demanded a stop to all mining activities in forest reserves, the creation of dedicated courts to speed up the prosecution of illegal miners, and the utilization of military personnel to dismantle and eliminate all mining equipment in affected areas.

According to TUC’s Secretary General Ansah, the government’s lack of action has been strongly criticized due to the significant environmental damage caused by ongoing illegal mining, such as the devastation of rivers, farmlands, and forest reserves. He cautioned that if concrete actions are not taken by the end of September, Organised Labour will organize a series of demonstrations and a nationwide strike to compel the government to take action.
