Galamsey: Organised Labour to embark on nationwide strike from October 10

Organised Labour has declared a nationwide strike, set to begin on October 10, 2024, citing the government’s failure to address their concerns regarding illegal mining, also known as galamsey.

At an emergency meeting held on Tuesday, October 10, the labour group expressed frustration over the government’s lack of action on the matter. Organised Labour had previously set a September deadline, urging the authorities to clamp down on galamsey, which they believe is devastating Ghana’s environment and impacting the livelihoods of citizens.

In a statement, the Secretary General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Joshua Ansah, announced the decision: “With the deadline behind us and no substantial action from the government on the illegal mining issue, Organised Labour has resolved to embark on a nationwide strike from October 10, 2024.”

He called on workers across the country to stay home as a form of protest, emphasizing that this action is necessary to compel the government to urgently address the galamsey crisis.
