NPP Raises Concerns Over Organized Labour’s Anti-Galamsey Strike

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has expressed apprehension regarding the motives behind Organized Labour’s planned strike against illegal mining, suggesting that it aligns with the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s political agenda for the upcoming 2024 elections.

In a press statement from the NPP’s National Youth Organizer, Salam Mustapha, concerns were raised about a leaked document titled “Winning 2024 and Beyond,” created by the NDC in 2021 and disclosed in December 2022. Mustapha alleged that this document outlines the NDC’s electoral strategy and implies that Organized Labour is acting in accordance with this politically driven plan to implement the Strike.

The NPP’s statement highlighted the government’s extensive efforts over the past seven years to combat illegal mining. These efforts include significant legislative measures, prosecutions, and military interventions aimed at safeguarding the environment and natural resources. The party noted that during these initiatives, Organized Labour had remained largely silent, only to now appear as vocal critics.

The statement further accused Organized Labour of overlooking substantial concessions made by the government during a recent meeting with the President to address their concerns.

The NPP urged Ghanaians and members of Organized Labour to resist any attempts to politicize the fight against galamsey. The party emphasized that the issue of illegal mining transcends political boundaries and requires a united front from all stakeholders.
