The University of Ghana has officially announced the postponement of the 2024/2025 academic year due to ongoing strikes actions by various employee groups, including the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU), the Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG), and the Federation of Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSSAG).
The strikes, which began on September 16, 2024, are in response to unresolved issues, particularly the Controller and Accountant General’s Department’s (CAGD) failure to implement approved vehicle maintenance and off-campus allowances, despite receiving approval from the Ministry of Finance in August.
In a statement released today, the university confirmed that special programs will continue as scheduled and stated that a new date for the start of the academic year will be announced soon. The postponement stems from ongoing labor disputes between university management and key unions, who are on indefinite strike, demanding improved working conditions, including timely pension contributions and payment of allowances.
