Student jailed for defrauding woman on fake admission promise

A 30-year old student of University of Education, Winneba (UEW), Frank Anderson Junior has been convicted by the Winneba District Magistrate’s Court for defrauding by false pretenses which is contrary to Section 131 of the Criminal and Other Offences Act 29/60.

Andersen Junior pleaded guilty and prayed for an adjournment to pay the back the money but the court headed by Madam Josephine Fosua Appiah after considering his plea based on his own statement sentenced him.

In the case, as said by Detective Police Inspector Dorinda Azuma Prosecutor, Ms. Emeta Cecilia Odarno is a jobless woman while the convict is a UEW student. Both reside in Winneba. As a result in 2023 Ms. Odarno applied for admission to UEW and she climed the help of one Simon Alhassan, a student. Alhassan took her to meet Anderson Junior who said that he could assist her gain the admission. In particular, Anderson demanded GH₵2,500 to make a payment. For the admission process Adding to that heterogeneity of the applicant pool and NCAA rules that prohibit payment of athletes, the University of Iowa relied on athletic scholarships to lure talented athletes to their institution By offering athletic scholarships, the University of Iowa created a platform that would attract talent to their institution since according to the NCAA rules they could not pay the athletes.

Ms. Odarno used the money and on the 06/08/2024, she received a PDF of an admission letter for 2023/2024 through email and forwarded to her by the convict using Alhassan but when Ms. Odarno attempted to pay her school fees she had issues with the index number of the-letter.

In search of more help, the complainant got in touch with another witness, Samuel Teye Dei and engaged Anderson. Specifically Mr. Anderson told Ms. Odarno to pay GH₵2,300. 00 for the fees which she used Teye Dei to transffer. The convict later presented what looked like an official receipt of UEW from Zenith Bank Ghana Limited, Winneba Branch.

Ms. Odarno received a receipt from UEW to attend the lectures but she learnt that the copy was fake. When she went to Student Center to confirm her admission status she realized the letter of admission was fake and her name was not listed in the university registers. She reported the case to the police, and Anderson was arrested. They planned to sue her for defamation of character.

While on investigation, Anderson for instance was forced to pay back GH₵2,230. 00 electronically to Mohammed Samuel Alhassan the twin brother of Simon Alhassan and an additional four thousand eight hundred and fifty cedis GHC4500. It was recovered from him It was further revealed that the sum of N100, 000. After the investigation, Anderson was charged, and the case proceeded to the court where he was convicted on the matter.
