The Eastern Regional Chairman of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Godwin Awoonor-Yevu, has issued a strong warning to teachers against exploiting their students. Speaking at a World Teachers’ Day celebration held on October 5 in Kwahu Mpreaso, Eastern Region, he condemned any form of inappropriate behavior, particularly sexual misconduct, by educators, reminding them that such actions are never part of their entitlements.
In a stern caution, he referenced a troubling incident where four teachers from the same school were caught engaging in sexual activities with their students. “These teachers faced the disciplinary committee and broke down in tears. But who brought them to that point?” Awoonor-Yevu asked rhetorically.
He stressed that teachers involved in immoral acts will not receive support from any union, stating clearly, “No union will defend you when you’re involved in immoral behavior. It’s not covered under welfare benefits. It becomes a matter of disciplinary action.”
Awoonor-Yevu also called for a renewed commitment to improving the working conditions and overall wellbeing of teachers through a “new social contract.” He advocated for policies that support teachers’ welfare, provide job security, fair compensation, and ensure teachers are part of the decision-making process in education policy. “We need a participatory approach to policy-making that empowers teachers, provides them with safe, inclusive environments, opportunities for professional development, and recognizes their contribution to education,” he added.
