On Friday, October 18, the Supreme Court issued an order suspending Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin’s declaration that four parliamentary seats had been vacated. This ruling was made by a five-member panel of justices, led by Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, alongside Justices Mariam Owusu, S.K.A. Asiedu, E.Y. Gaewu, and Y. Darko Asare.
The Supreme Court directed both Parliament and the Attorney General to immediately recognize the four affected Members of Parliament (MPs) and allow them to continue representing their respective constituencies. The court’s decision allows these MPs to perform all duties associated with their positions pending the final outcome of a case filed by Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Majority Leader and MP for Effutu.
The MPs involved in the case include Madam Cynthia Mamle Morrison, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP for Agona West; Kwadjo Asante, NPP MP for Suhum; Peter Yaw Kwakye-Ackah, National Democratic Congress (NDC) MP for Amenfi Central; and Andrew Amoako Asiamah, the Independent MP for Fomena and the Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament.
