Gov’t Committed To Legal, Sustainable Mining – Lands Ministry

The government’s dedication to promoting sustainable and legal mining in Ghana was restated by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources. In a statement released on Wednesday, September 11, the ministry emphasized that the top priority remains responsible mining, which aims to protect the environment and ensure the well-being of communities impacted by mining activities. The ministry emphasized the government’s heightened efforts to address illegal mining, known as “galamsey,” under the current administration. These efforts have gained urgency in response to mounting pressure from various groups calling for immediate action to halt the environmental damage caused by galamsey operations.

The Trades Union Congress (TUC), led by Organised Labour, issued a stern ultimatum to the government on Wednesday, September 11. In a statement, Joshua Ansah, the TUC’s Secretary General, cautioned that if the government does not tackle the escalating galamsey crisis, a nationwide strike will be launched by the end of September.

The growing pressure from various groups, including Organised Labour, has intensified the call for the government to take decisive action against galamsey, which continues to threaten Ghana’s natural resources and the livelihoods of its people.
