The Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) of the Trade Union Congress-Ghana (TUC) has announced plans to go on strike if the government fails to finalize and implement their Conditions of Service by Monday, November 18, 2024.
In a statement on Thursday, November 14, TEWU expressed frustration over the prolonged delay in concluding the Conditions of Service for its members working within the Ghana Education Service (GES), Ghana Library Authority (GhLA), Museums and Monuments Board, Public Technical Universities, and Public Universities. TEWU noted that negotiations on these service conditions have been ongoing for several years without resolution.
The Union voiced disappointment over the lack of progress despite years of negotiations, stating, “TEWU members had hoped these agreements would have been implemented by now. Unfortunately, for the past four years, it has been a continuous back and forth with government agencies.” TEWU emphasized that with the new academic year approaching, its members, particularly those involved in first-year student admissions, are unable to continue working under unclear Conditions of Service.
Given these unresolved issues, TEWU has warned that if the government does not act promptly, an indefinite strike will begin on November 18, 2024.
