Democracy Hub protesters have been accused of disrupting traffic flow and disturbing the peace in Accra during demonstrations that escalated into a scuffle with the police on Sunday, September 22. The protest, which entered its second day today, saw demonstrators blocking key roads, including parts of the 37 Roundabout, leading to severe traffic delays and frustration among commuters.
Led by legal practitioner Oliver Barker-Vormawor, the protesters are pushing for governance reforms they believe will improve the lives of Ghanaians. Despite police intervention to restore order, the group remains steadfast in their demands, vowing to continue until their concerns are addressed.
On the first day, demonstrators blocked sections of the 37 Roundabout, prompting a swift response from the police, who acted to ease traffic and prevent further disruption. This police intervention was met with criticism from the protest organizers.
In a press statement, the Ghana Police Service condemned the protesters’ actions as “unGhanaian” and affirmed their commitment to upholding peace and preventing traffic disruptions. The protesters responded with their own statement, expressing disappointment in the police’s “disrespectful language” and defending their right to protest.
As the demonstrations continue, tensions remain high, with both sides holding firm to their respective stances, setting the stage for a contentious final day of protests.
