Train drivers in Britain have voted overwhelmingly to accept a new pay offer, signaling the end of a prolonged industrial dispute and a series of disruptive strikes. The trade union ASLEF reported that approximately 96.6% of members approved the deal, with a turnout of 88.5%.
Over the past two years, around 13,000 train drivers participated in 18 days of strike action, impacting 16 train companies. Negotiations began between the new government and ASLEF after the Labour Party’s significant electoral victory in July.
The pay offer includes a 5% increase for 2022/23, followed by 4.75% for 2023/24 and 4.5% for 2024/25. Strikes in the rail sector have become more frequent amid rising inflation and a cost-of-living crisis, prompting demands for improved wages across various industries.
