President-elect Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy will head the newly established Department of Government Efficiency. In a statement, Trump emphasized that the two men would lead efforts to streamline government operations by cutting unnecessary regulations, eliminating wasteful spending, and restructuring federal agencies.
The project is set to conclude by July 4, 2026, with Trump highlighting that a more streamlined and efficient government would be a “gift” to the nation as it celebrates the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
The appointments reward two prominent Trump allies from the private sector. Musk is the CEO of Tesla, SpaceX, and the social media platform X, while Ramaswamy, the founder of a pharmaceutical company, ran for the Republican presidential nomination before endorsing Trump after dropping out of the race.
Musk has been a vocal supporter of Trump, contributing millions to his campaign and making several public appearances with him. Trump had previously hinted at offering Musk a role to promote government efficiency, and this announcement formalizes that.
The new department’s acronym, DOGE, aligns with the name of the cryptocurrency Dogecoin, which Musk is known for promoting. Musk expressed his belief that this initiative would send “shockwaves through the system,” targeting government waste and inefficiency.
Trump called the department a project of immense importance, likening it to the “Manhattan Project” that led to the development of the atomic bomb during World War II.
