Ghana Armed Forces Warns Against Unauthorized Use of Military-Style Uniform by Civilians

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has issued a stern warning regarding the rising unauthorized use of military-pattern uniform by civilians, including protesters, private security personnel, and illegal miners. This warning comes in response to a concerning trend where individuals have been spotted wearing military-style uniform during protests and illegal mining operations.

Recent demonstrations in Accra and Kumasi have featured individuals, some claiming to offer security for public figures, dressed in military camouflage. Similar occurrences have been reported at illegal mining sites, known locally as “Galamsey” areas, and among certain political activists.

GAF expressed alarm over these acts, stating they not only violate existing laws but also mislead the public into believing these individuals are affiliated with the military. Citing the National Liberation Council Decree (NLCD) 177 of 1967, GAF reminded citizens that only authorized Armed Forces members may wear military uniforms or utilize military equipment.

In a statement released on October 14, 2024, Brigadier General E. Aggrey-Quashie, Director General of Public Relations for GAF, emphasized that the unauthorized use of military uniforms poses significant security risks. He warned that such actions make it easier for individuals to deceive the public. Those apprehended will face prosecution under Ghanaian law, and GAF will work alongside law enforcement agencies to ensure accountability.

As Ghana approaches the December 2024 elections, GAF underscored the importance of national cooperation in maintaining peace and security. The Armed Forces urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities involving unauthorized military attire, reaffirming their dedication to protecting the nation’s integrity and the safety of its citizens.

Brigadier General Aggrey-Quashie called on all citizens to contribute to the stability of the nation during this critical time, stressing that the misuse of military uniforms could heighten tensions and potentially lead to unrest. GAF’s message serves as a vital reminder for Ghanaians to respect state institutions and avoid actions that threaten peace and order.
