The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has ended its strike over the environmental destruction caused by illegal mining, widely known as ‘galamsey.’
The suspension of the strike, effective immediately, came after a vote by UTAG members, just days following the National Executive Council’s (NEC) directive for lecturers at public universities to resume classes by October 29.
UTAG initiated the strike on October 10, 2024, to protest the government’s perceived lack of action against galamsey, which has wreaked havoc on river systems and forest reserves.
The strike had led to significant academic disruptions across the country. In a statement announcing the suspension, UTAG acknowledged the difficulty of the decision but emphasized the broader implications on students and institutions.
The Association affirmed its continued commitment to the anti-galamsey cause, vowing to protect Ghana’s environment. Additionally, UTAG highlighted the importance of exploring other legal avenues to push for effective action on the issue of illegal mining.
