WAEC releases 2024 BECE results; cancels results of 41 candidates

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced the release of provisional results for candidates who participated in the 2024 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for both School and Private Candidates.

In a statement dated October 19, WAEC confirmed that the results for school candidates will be dispatched to their respective schools through the Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Directors of Education. However, the results of 41 school candidates and one private candidate have been completely cancelled due to detected irregularities.

Moreover, the results of 33 school candidates and three private candidates are currently under investigation for alleged malpractice. These results have been withheld pending the outcome of the inquiries.

During its 35th meeting held on October 16, 2024, the Final Awards and Examiners’ Appointment Committee reviewed and approved the cancellation of subject results for 377 school candidates and three private candidates. In addition, results from 149 schools have also been withheld for further review, with WAEC noting that these results could either be cancelled or released depending on the findings of the ongoing investigations.

A total of 569,236 candidates, comprising 282,703 males and 286,533 females, registered for the 2024 BECE for School Candidates from 19,505 schools across the country. This group included 59 visually impaired candidates, 263 with hearing impairments, and 161 candidates with other special accommodations. The examination was conducted in 2,123 centers nationwide, and 3,845 candidates were recorded as absent.

For the BECE for Private Candidates, a total of 1,390 candidates, including 750 males and 640 females, registered for the exam, which was conducted across 15 centers mostly situated in regional capitals. Of these candidates, 57 were reported absent.
