The Black Satellites of Ghana started their 2024 WAFU B Cup of Nations journey with a thrilling 2-2 draw against Benin in their opening match held in Lomé.
Ghana’s standout performer, Jerry Afriyie, scored both goals for Desmond Ofei’s side. He put Ghana ahead in the 14th minute with a brilliant individual effort, dribbling past a defender and rounding the goalkeeper to score into an open net.
However, Benin responded swiftly, leveling the match in the 26th minute with a diving header that left Ghana’s goalkeeper helpless. Just before halftime, Benin gained the upper hand, scoring a stunning long-range goal to take a 2-1 lead.
Determined to avoid defeat, the Black Satellites pressed hard in the second half, dominating possession and creating several chances, but struggled to find the back of the net. Their resilience paid off in stoppage time when Ghana earned a penalty after a foul inside the Benin box. Jerry Afriyie, confident from his earlier goal, calmly converted the spot-kick, securing a vital point for his team.
With both matches in Group A finishing 2-2—Togo and Niger also drawing—the group remains wide open. Ghana will look to secure their first win when they face Niger on Sunday, October 20.
