The management of Ghana Water Company Limited in the Central Region warns of problems with water supply in Cape Coast, Elmina, and the neighbouring communities. They claim that the illegal mining (galamsey) operations that resulted in insufficient raw water being received at the Sekyere Hemang Water Treatment Plant (WTP) is the source of the recent shortfall between supply and demand.
This information was included in a news release that the Central Regional Office of GWL signed and distributed on Friday, August 30. According to the statement, water intake has been drastically restricted to the bare minimum due to pollution of the Pra River, particularly at the catchment area for abstraction.
The plant’s current capacity is only about 7,500m³ per day, which is about 25% of its installed capacity. The plant has apologised for any inconvenience caused to customers and consumers due to this situation. They also urged residents to support initiatives that protect water bodies and encourage sustainable water use practices, as well as to report any illegal mining activities to local assemblies and community leaders.
