What You Need To Know About Mpox

The sub-region has seen a surge in Mpox cases; hence, the Ghana Health Service (GHS) has increased its surveillance and emergency response systems to promptly identify potential cases. The African Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) declared the illness a “public health emergency” of security significance on Tuesday. This comes after that designation.

In 1958, while looking into a monkey illness that resembled the pox, researchers at the State Serum Institute in Copenhagen, Denmark, discovered the monkeypox virus. However, it was discovered in 1970 in a 9-year-old child in Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo), an area where smallpox had been eradicated in 1968.

Due to an upsurge in Mpox cases in the sub-region, the Ghana Health Service (GHS) has strengthened its emergency response and surveillance mechanisms in order to quickly detect possible cases. The disease has been deemed a “public health emergency” of security significance by the African Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) on Tuesday. That identification is followed by this.

In 1958, scientists at the State Serum Institute in Copenhagen, Denmark, made the discovery of the monkeypox virus while investigating a disease that affected monkeys that mimicked the common cold. But in Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo), where smallpox had been declared extinct in 1968, it was found in a 9-year-old boy in 1970.

The time it takes for monkeypox to incubate, or from infection to symptom manifestation, is typically 6 to 16 days, though it can vary to 5 to 21 days. Typically, monkeypox is a self-limiting illness that lasts between 14 and 21 days.

Although there are currently no known cures or vaccinations for monkeypox, outbreaks can be managed. Only in the laboratory, where the virus can be detected through a variety of tests, can monkeypox be definitively diagnosed.

Living in or close to forested regions, increases the risk of subclinical (asymptomatic) infection, due to indirect or low-level animal exposure.  The case fatality rate has been less than 10% in recorded instances, primarily involving small children, but it has varied greatly between epidemics. Younger age groups seem to be more vulnerable to monkeypox overall.
