The National Liberation Congress (NLC) and the Ghana Alternative Party (GAP) have both announced their withdrawal from the December 7 elections. The choice was made on September 11th, in an emergency meeting chaired by Osahene Nana Agyei Boateng, the founder and head of GAP. Stephen Atubiga had originally planned to run under the NLC-GAP alliance as an independent.
However, since the Electoral Commission (EC) had not yet made the NLC’s final certification public and there had been insufficient time to register a new alliance logo, the parties decided to withdraw from the race. The choice was affected by several factors, such as remarks made by individuals stating that endorsing an independent candidate would be a waste of votes given the intense rivalry between the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Furthermore, a great deal of people believe that due to the current economic situation, only the major parties are able to govern the nation effectively. The alliance went on to say that a unified third force consisting of all independent candidates and smaller parties may have garnered more votes. Voters were dubious, nevertheless, due to the broken nature of the minor parties and independent candidates. Even after withdrawing from the race, the NLC and GAP coalition remains committed to its goals and platform. They wish to support any party that shares their perspective in the interest of the country.
