Black Princesses coach Yussif Basigi appears very confident with his team ready to start this year’s U-20 Women’s World Cup today starting with an opener against Austria. Ghana U-20 women’s team begins their seventh Woman’s U-20 World Cup tonight at the Estadio Metropolitano de Techo in Bogotá, Colombia against Austria, a participant in the tournament for the first time.
This was after the Princesses performed exceptionally well on the continental scene where they scooped gold in the women’s football category Basigi and his team set sight for the international scene. This is the eleventh time the UEFA U-20 Women’s Cup is taking place and the event started from August 31 up to September 22, 2024, in Colombia.
The Black Princesses are aiming for a strong start against Austria to alleviate some pressure as they pursue their first mission: For them, getting past the group stages is the new norm. Ghana’s junior team has failed to get through this stage in the tournament, and has been demoted to the group stage since 2012 in all six editions of the competition starting with 2010.
Knowing all these, Hasaacas Ladies’ former coach Basigi is bent on reversing this trend. He’s very motivated as he takes his team onto the world stage once again. After participating in the U-20 Women’s World Cup, the Black Princesses have participated in 18 matches, but have only won 4, 11 losses and 3 draws. They are happy to call this their fifth win tonight at the expense of Austria team.
Basigi also wanted to personally thank the people of Ghana and the Ghana Football Association (GFA) as well as the government of the republic of Ghana. He stressed the support as the team seeks to end the trend of group stage elimination in their first round of this year’s tournament.
The Black Princesses’ next game is on Thursday against Japan which clinched the 2018 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, and their last group stage match is against New Zealand to be played on Sunday. A win in their first match will act as a catalyst for their campaign because the team is eager to go beyond the group stage of this year’s world cup.
