The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has issued a one-week ultimatum to the West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) to release the withheld results of some 2024 WASSCE candidates.
At a press briefing on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, NUGS President Daniel Korley Botchway warned that failure to comply would result in nationwide protests targeting WAEC offices.
โIf they do not release the results within a week, we will launch a series of protests and occupy their offices across the country,โ Botchway declared. โIf they are incapable of performing their duties, they should notify the government to replace them with a more competent examination body.โ
NUGS has also vowed to pursue legal action against WAEC, despite an ongoing case at the Accra High Court.
The controversy stems from WAECโs decision to withhold over 10,500 results due to alleged examination malpractice. Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu, representing affected candidates, filed a motion for Mandamus, demanding the release of the results.
On Friday, January 30, 2025, the Accra High Court ruled in favor of the candidates, ordering WAEC to immediately release the withheld results. Presiding judge Justice Ali Baba Abature criticized WAEC for failing to provide clear reasons for its actions, citing inconsistencies in the justification for the withheld resultsโranging from โalleged examination malpracticeโ to โalleged irregularities.โ
The judge also noted that WAECโs own invigilators had reported no malpractices during the examination, further weakening the councilโs case.
Meanwhile, WAEC has filed a stay of execution at the High Court, seeking to delay compliance with the ruling.
As tensions escalate, students, parents, and stakeholders await WAECโs response within the given deadline, with NUGS standing firm on its threat of mass protests.
