The Ghana Education Service (GES) has issued a warning to heads of basic schools, urging them to stop charging unauthorized fees for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) registration for final-year students.

In a statement released on February 12, 2025, the GES addressed reports circulating on social media, claiming that some school heads were collecting such fees from students. The GES firmly stated that these fees are illegal and ordered all school heads to immediately cease this practice.

The GES has instructed Regional Directors to work with District Directors to monitor schools and ensure adherence to the directive.

Furthermore, any school heads who have already collected unauthorized fees must refund the money, and failure to comply will lead to disciplinary action.

The statement also reminded schools that late registration of BECE candidates will not be allowed. All eligible students must complete their registration within the specified period set by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).

Signed by Cassandra Twum Ampofo, the Head of the Public Relations Unit, the GES urged the public to be aware of the announcement and take note of the directive.
