Nhyiaeso MP Dr. Stephen Amoah Backs Probe Into National Cathedral Expenditure, “National cathedral funds must be investigated even though I am NPP”
Member of Parliament for Nhyiaeso, Dr. Stephen Amoah, has joined growing calls for a full-scale investigation into the funds spent on the National Cathedral project, a highly controversial initiative launched under the former New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.
Despite being an NPP member, Dr. Amoah has openly voiced concerns about the exorbitant costs and the project’s location, emphasizing the need for accountability.
MP Calls for Transparency in National Cathedral Spending
In an exclusive interview with Joy News, Dr. Amoah stated that while he supports the idea of a National Cathedral as a Christian, he believes the financial irregularities surrounding the project must be thoroughly investigated.
“Honestly, I am not against the Cathedral because I am a Christian, but I support those raising concerns about how much has been spent. I believe the funds should be investigated, and the people questioning the expenditure are right.”
He also raised concerns about the location of the project, arguing that with the International Conference Centre and Parliament nearby, alternative sites could have been considered to minimize costs and disruptions.
“Even though I am NPP, I personally think the location is problematic. The money spent on the Cathedral is a major concern, and I share the sentiments of those criticizing it. However, we need to complete investigations first,” he added.
Ongoing Investigations Into Financial Mismanagement
Dr. Amoah’s remarks come at a time when former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta is facing scrutiny over alleged financial mismanagement related to the National Cathedral and other high-profile government projects. Calls for accountability have intensified, with demands for a full audit of the $58 million already spent amid concerns of corruption and misappropriation of funds.
National Cathedral: A Vision Plagued by Controversy
The National Cathedral project was launched in March 2017 by former President Akufo-Addo, who described it as a personal promise to God in gratitude for becoming Ghana’s leader. The ambitious $450 million project, designed to cover 3.5 hectares near Parliament House, was meant to include a 5,000-seat auditorium, chapels, a Bible museum, an art gallery, and a house of music.
However, the project, initially set for completion by March 6, 2024, has faced multiple delays, financial mismanagement allegations, and public backlash. Despite millions of dollars being pumped into it, little progress has been made, fueling further concerns about wasteful spending and lack of transparency.
With public pressure mounting and more political figures like Dr. Amoah supporting an investigation, the National Cathedral project remains a key issue in Ghana’s political and financial discourse.
