Without Streetlights, We’ll Be Exposed To More Accidents On The Road – Transport Consultant

Road safety advocate and transportation analyst Cecil Garbrah has cautioned that if streetlights are not fixed immediately, the nation may experience an increase in traffic fatalities. He said that since streetlights are an integral component of the engineering of our highways, there ought to be a lot more accidents on them. Cecil Garbrah was responding to a nationwide TV3 ad about broken lighting. He went on to say that an increasing number of drivers are developing eye-related problems.

The number of dead lamps in the capital keeps growing every day and week, endangering the lives of drivers. Major roads in Accra are completely obscured by darkness at night, making it challenging for motorists to see the road, especially in places devoid of reflective markings or road signage. Road safety experts are concerned about this situation and are calling for immediate action to stop fatalities on the way to elections.

Well-erected poles were useless from the Accra-Nsawam-Kumasi highway because the lights on them were entirely off. The fifteen-kilometer Awoshie-Pokuase road was the same. You would have thought that a road with a contract given by the late President Atta Mills would have better visibility, but residents along the line are pushing for an expedient solution to avert a potential calamity, although the majority of the light poles on the stretch are merely cosmetic.

Beyond the issue of road safety, there are grave issues raised by the scenario, which campaigners have bemoaned. The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) states that it is extremely challenging to determine the reason behind the lights remaining on. People who utilise the roads express worry for their lives, citing incidents of auto theft and robbery when they break down at night.

About thirty percent of traffic accidents occur at night, according to the Ghana Police Service’s Motor Traffic and Transport Department. According to the Ghana Statistical Service, poor lighting is a major contributing factor in over 40% of traffic fatalities, which are caused by pedestrian knockdowns. Experts concur that the nation’s streetlights urgently need to be fixed in order to increase safety and boost economic productivity.
