Akufo-Addo commissions Oil and Gas services terminal at Takoradi Port

President Akufo-Addo has officially inaugurated a state-of-the-art Oil and Gas Services Terminal at the Takoradi Port, reaffirming his government’s dedication to maintaining the competitiveness of both the Tema and Takoradi Ports as vital gateways for international trade and regional integration.

This new terminal is designed to provide a top-tier shore-based logistics platform, complete with offshore supply vessel (OSV) birthing facilities and a serviced waterfront land area to support the operations of offshore oil and gas exploration. The Takoradi Port already hosts the Atlantic Container and Multipurpose Terminal, as well as a newly established dry bulk terminal, signaling significant investment in the nation’s port infrastructure. President Akufo-Addo highlighted that these upgrades demonstrate the government’s commitment to boosting Ghana’s economic competitiveness on the global stage.

In his address during the commissioning ceremony, President Akufo-Addo emphasized that the opening of the Oil and Gas Services Terminal marks a significant step forward for Ghana in becoming a major hub for oil and gas services in the region. The terminal features a 550-meter quay wall, a 10-meter dredged draft, and 200,000 square meters of serviced land for oilfield operators, logistics providers, operational offices, workshops, and storage.

Reflecting on the earlier developments at the port, including the commissioning of the Atlantic Container and Multipurpose Terminal and the dry bulk terminal, the President noted that the new Oil and Gas Services Terminal is another milestone in Ghana’s efforts to streamline offshore supply services, enhance heavy engineering and fabrication activities, and offer a complete range of services to the petroleum industry. He reiterated that this development strengthens Ghana’s position as a competitive destination for oil and gas operations.

Furthermore, President Akufo-Addo reiterated his government’s progress towards establishing Ghana’s third commercial port in the Keta Municipality of the Volta Region. He assured that substantial strides have been made, including conducting feasibility studies, stakeholder consultations, and environmental impact assessments.

The Director-General of the Ghana Ports and Harbors Authority (GPHA), Michael Luguje, urged stakeholders in the oil and gas sector to fully utilize the new terminal. He emphasized that the terminal, long anticipated by the industry, is now ready for use, offering a one-stop-shop for industry players.

The Takoradi Oil and Gas Services Terminal was funded by GPHA, with China Harbor Engineering serving as the contractor. The project includes the construction of a 550-meter quay wall, dredging of a 10-meter depth berth pocket, the development of approximately 1.9 kilometers of access road with drainage, and the installation of utility service ducts. Additionally, it provides a 200,000-square-meter serviced land area, complete with storage yards and concrete-paved roads.
