The Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has announced enhanced safety and security protocols for all domestic football competitions. The move comes in response to the tragic death of Asante Kotoko supporter Francis Frimpong, popularly known as Nana Pooley, during a Matchday 19 clash between Nsoatreman and Kotoko at Nana Kronmansah Park.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the GFA emphasized that the new measures will complement existing regulations to improve security at match venues and ensure the safety of all stakeholders.
“After thorough input and review, the Executive Council has approved the Enhanced Matchday Safety and Security Protocols 2025. These protocols will be implemented alongside existing competition regulations, stadium regulations, club licensing rules, the disciplinary code, the code of ethics, and other relevant directives,” the statement read.
The GFA also made it clear that the new safety protocols have been developed in collaboration with football clubs and will be enforced rigorously, with strict penalties for non-compliance.
Earlier this week, Ghanaian football giants Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak jointly submitted a proposal to the GFA, demanding a review of security measures at league venues. They expressed dissatisfaction with how the association had handled the recent tragedy and even threatened to withdraw from the league if their concerns were not adequately addressed.
With the introduction of these improved safety protocols, clubs that fail to adhere to the regulations will face severe sanctions as the GFA seeks to prevent further incidents and enhance security across all competitions.
