The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced a major increase in prize money for the 2026 TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), with the tournament winners set to receive $2 million.
The 2026 edition of the competition is scheduled to kick off on July 25, 2026, in Morocco.
The champions’ prize has doubled compared to the previous edition, while the overall prize fund has increased by 67 per cent, rising from $3.475 million to $5.8 million.
Under the new prize structure, the runners-up will receive $750,000, while each of the 16 participating teams is guaranteed $150,000 in participation funding.
CAF said the enhanced financial rewards form part of its continued commitment to accelerating the growth and development of women’s football across Africa.
The continental football governing body also disclosed that the winners’ prize has increased by 900 per cent since the current CAF administration assumed office, rising from $200,000 to $2 million.
According to CAF, the increased prize money is expected to provide greater financial support for national associations, reward sporting excellence and encourage further investment in women’s football across the continent.
The announcement comes ahead of the historic 2026 WAFCON in Morocco, which will be the first edition of the tournament to feature 16 teams following CAF’s expansion of the competition.
With a larger tournament and record prize money, CAF hopes the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations will further raise the profile of women’s football in Africa while strengthening the financial sustainability of participating national teams.
