Nigerian comedian Bright Okpocha, widely known as Basketmouth, has clarified that he is not leaving comedy for filmmaking, despite recently premiering his debut feature film, A Ghetto Love Story.
Speaking at the film’s exclusive premiere, Basketmouth affirmed his unwavering passion for comedy, announcing plans for an extensive comedy tour in 2025.
“I’m still fully involved in comedy. Next year, I’m going on a tour, starting with the UK and the US, and I’ll also have a show in Nigeria. Comedy remains my primary focus, and I have no plans to quit,” he assured.
While reiterating his commitment to stand-up comedy, Basketmouth revealed that he has chosen to forgo private gigs, including serving as an MC at weddings.
“The only thing I’ve decided to stop is private gigs, like weddings. Although they are lucrative, I felt it was compromising the essence of my craft. I came into this industry as a stand-up comedian, not to MC events,” he explained.
He added that while he may still perform at private events, his involvement would strictly be limited to stand-up comedy. “If I’m doing a private gig, it has to be about stand-up comedy—just 30 minutes and I’m done. But MCing at events? That’s something I’ve had to let go of because it felt like I was betraying my art,” he concluded.
