Efua Ghartey, a seasoned private legal practitioner, has made history by becoming the first woman to be elected President of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA). Her election took place during the annual Bar Conference in Kumasi on Wednesday, September 11.
Ghartey’s victory marks a significant milestone in breaking gender barriers within the traditionally male-dominated leadership of the GBA. Her success is being hailed as a breakthrough for gender equality, setting an example for future female leaders in Ghana’s legal community.
In a closely fought race, Ghartey secured 1,208 votes, narrowly defeating her competitor, Kwadzo Dzakpasu, who received 1,060 votes. Ghartey’s path to the presidency has been defined by years of dedication and a strong reputation as a passionate advocate for justice, earning her widespread respect among her colleagues.
Her election comes at a pivotal time when gender equality and women’s empowerment are prominent issues in Ghana, particularly following the passage of the Affirmative Action Gender Equity Bill in July 2024. This law seeks to address longstanding gender imbalances across various sectors, both public and private.
Alongside Ghartey, other key positions in the GBA were filled, with Baffour Gyau elected as General Secretary, Auralius Awuku as Assistant Secretary, Saviour Kodzi retaining his role as Public Relations Officer, and Lawrencia Adika chosen as Assistant PRO. The new leadership is expected to bring innovative ideas to the future of the association.
As GBA President, Efua Ghartey is anticipated to lead with a commitment to legal reforms and inclusivity, further advancing the legal profession in Ghana.
