Ghanaian musician Maradona Yeboah Adjei, widely known as Guru, is contesting his disqualification from the 2024 University of Ghana Students’ Representative Council (UGSRC) elections. On August 16, 2024, the UGSRC Electoral Commission ruled Guru ineligible, citing a violation of the constitutional residency requirement as specified in Article 4(d)(ii) of the Constitutional Instrument (CI 24), stating that candidates who fail to meet the residency requirements are ineligible to run for office.
In response, Guru has petitioned the UGSRC Judicial Board, requesting an interim injunction to postpone the upcoming elections scheduled for August 26, 2024, until his case is resolved. His petition challenges the fairness and constitutionality of excluding non-resident students from participating in the SRC elections, arguing that such decisions affect the entire student body.
Guru contends that the UGSRC Electoral Commission lacks the authority to interpret and enforce constitutional provisions, making their decision to disqualify him unconstitutional. He argues that the Commission overstepped its mandate by disqualifying his candidacy based on residency requirements, a move he believes undermines the fairness and legality of the election process.
The petition states, “TAKE NOTICE that the Plaintiff/Applicant hereby prays for an order for an interim injunction to restrain the Defendant/Respondent, their agents, servants, and any persons authorized by them from proceeding with the election pending the final determination of this suit.”
