Celebrating Teshie Homowo – The Ga people

What is Homowo?

The Ga people of Ghana celebrate Homowo, a festival that takes place in the Greater Accra Region. Before the rainy season officially begins, the event takes place in late April or early May, coinciding with the sowing of crops, primarily millet. The Ga people commemorate Homowo in recollection of a famine that once struck precolonial Ghana, their ancestral home. The Asere Quarter’s Damte Dsanwe people and the Native Calendar are the sources of the yearly Accra ritual known as the Ga Homowo, or Harvest Custom.
