Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno has directed the immediate deployment of a special investigative team to Cape Coast to assist in investigations into the death of a University of Cape Coast (UCC) student, whose body was recently discovered after she was reported missing.

The deceased, identified as Innocentia Avinu, was a student of the University of Cape Coast whose disappearance generated widespread concern among family members, colleagues, and the university community after she could not be located for several days.

According to police sources, the student was reported missing under circumstances that initially remained unclear, prompting both security agencies and members of the public to launch efforts to trace her whereabouts.

The case took a tragic turn when her body was discovered, leading to calls from students, civil society groups, and members of the public for a thorough and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.

In response to growing public concern, the IGP ordered the deployment of experienced investigators from the Police Headquarters to support local officers and ensure that all available evidence is properly examined.

The special investigative team is expected to work closely with the Central Regional Police Command, forensic experts, and other relevant institutions to determine the exact cause of death and establish whether foul play was involved.

Police officials have indicated that witness statements, surveillance footage, digital communications, and forensic evidence will form part of the investigation as authorities seek to reconstruct the events leading to the student’s death.

The University of Cape Coast has expressed sorrow over the incident and pledged its full cooperation with law enforcement agencies, while also offering support to the bereaved family and affected students.

Student leaders have welcomed the intervention by the IGP, describing it as an important step toward ensuring justice and addressing concerns about safety and security within and around the university community.

Authorities have assured the public that the investigation will be conducted professionally and thoroughly, with the Police Administration emphasizing that anyone found to be connected to the student’s death will face the full force of the law.
