The Ghana National Association of Small-Scale Miners (GNASSM) has announced a successful discussion with the government aimed at combating illegal mining in the country. This collaboration is a significant step toward safeguarding Ghana’s natural resources.
Key outcomes of this partnership include the deployment of trained water wardens and Navy personnel to join GNASSM’s task force, which will patrol water bodies and protect designated red zone forest reserves. Together, GNASSM and the government will focus on the sustainable management of these critical ecosystems.
Alhassan Abdul Razak also mentioned plans to invite Organised Labour, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), and other stakeholders calling for a total ban on lawful small-scale mining to unite in addressing this issue. To raise awareness about the importance of protecting water bodies and forest reserves, GNASSM will host a public forum in Osino, Eastern Region on October 11, 2024.
