Mahama pledges to resurrect cocoa farming with year-round irrigation.

John Mahama, the Presidential Candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has unveiled plans to introduce year-round irrigation for cocoa farmers in cocoa-producing regions as part of his strategy to revitalize the sector.

Speaking on the second day of his tour of the Western North Region, Mahama addressed various constituencies, highlighting what he termed the decline of the cocoa sector under the current administration. He outlined a detailed plan to support farmers through innovative irrigation methods.

“The destruction of our forests under the NPP government over the past eight years has been alarming,” Mahama stated. “During the harmattan season, cocoa farmers in the Western North Region suffered greatly. To address this, our new plan involves drilling boreholes on cocoa farms and providing water storage facilities to conserve rainwater, ensuring irrigation throughout the year.”

Mahama further criticized the Akufo-Addo administration, accusing it of neglecting the cocoa industry and allowing its decline through mismanagement.

In addition to his agricultural reforms, Mahama took aim at President Akufo-Addo for erecting a statue in his honor while still in office. He described the act as premature and unnecessary, contrasting it with what he considered his own impactful legacy.

“All they focus on is erecting statues. Normally, leaders leave office first, allowing their good works to be evaluated before they are honored. But self-glorification while still in office? Is that how it’s done?” Mahama questioned.

He further remarked, “If I were to celebrate my achievements with statues, they would be at Tema Harbour, Kotoka Airport Terminal 3, the University of Ghana Medical Centre, the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange, and Kejetia Market. My statues would be across the country. Yet, even the project surrounding the monument they built hasn’t been completed.”

Mahama’s statements drew attention to the NDC’s vision for the cocoa sector and broader criticisms of governance under the current administration.
