The National Theatre of Ghana on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, held its Annual Conference of Performing Arts at the British Council, Accra.
Themed “A Rich Performing Arts Industry: The Role of Public Policy, the event brought together relevant stakeholders in the creative arts industry.
The event served as a platform for creatives to discuss ways to advance the Ghanaian creative industry. Held on Wednesday, it set the stage for a larger conference planned for October 2, 2024.
Pan-Africanist scholar and writer Prof. Esi Sutherland-Addy, Dr. Edward Odoi, Mr. Kwame Boadi, and Mr. Joseph Sarpong headlined the discussions, with Apiorkor Seyiram Ashong-Abbey moderating the session.
The speakers emphasized that a vibrant performing arts industry is crucial for a flourishing cultural sector. They called for the formulation of public policies to support the growth of the creative industry, urging for investment in infrastructure, enhanced funding, and the establishment of a policy framework to reinforce intellectual property rights. They stressed the importance of comprehensive research and data on the creative economy to improve capacity and ensure long-term stability.
Key attendees included Nana Fredua-Agyeman Ofori-Atta, Board Chairman of the National Theatre, former MP and Information Minister Fritz Baffour, and Prof. Awo Mana Asiedu, Dean of the School of Performing Arts, among other notable figures from the industry.
