Ghana’s head coach, Otto Addo, has declared his intention to remain in charge of the Black Stars, despite the team’s inability to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The Black Stars concluded their AFCON qualifying campaign with a disappointing record, failing to secure a single win and finishing at the bottom of Group F with just three points. Their hopes were officially dashed following a 2-1 loss to Niger at the Accra Sports Stadium on Monday.
Addressing reporters after the match, Addo dismissed calls for his resignation, citing his perseverance and journey to his current position.
“I’m not someone who quits. If I had that mentality, I would never have become a player or coach,” the 47-year-old stated.
“Those asking me to step down don’t know the struggles I’ve faced to get here. Their criticisms won’t affect me.”
Addo acknowledged the Black Stars’ defensive struggles, particularly their vulnerability to set pieces, which he identified as a recurring issue throughout the campaign.
“We started well but conceded from a set piece. It’s something we’ve discussed before, especially after Niger scored a similar goal against us previously. We need to improve in this area,” he admitted.
The coach also expressed frustration over what he described as a string of misfortunes affecting the team.
Despite the overall failure, Addo pointed to the performances of debutants as a positive takeaway.
“There were some bright spots today, especially from players who were making their first appearances. They justified their inclusion,” he noted.
Addo appealed to both the media and fans to rally behind the team rather than assigning blame.
“You have the power to shape the narrative. Instead of focusing solely on the results, help lift these players up,” he urged. “The players gave everything they had. They need your support, not criticism.”
The team’s failure to qualify marks the first time in 21 years that Ghana will miss an AFCON tournament.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council is set to meet on Wednesday to evaluate the team’s performance and chart a path forward. While Addo’s future as coach hangs in the balance, he remains resolute in his commitment to the Black Stars.
