Oliver Barker-Vormawor and 11 Others Remanded Amid Ongoing Demonstration Legal Battle

The Accra Circuit Court has remanded Oliver Barker-Vormawor, convener of the #FixTheCountry protest, along with 11 other protesters, following their participation in the recent three-day #StopGalamseyNow and #ReoccupyJulorbiHouse demonstrations organized by Democracy Hub. This brings the total number of protesters remanded to 51.

In court on September 26, Barker-Vormawor pleaded not guilty to all eight charges against him. His defense attorney sought bail on health grounds, arguing that the police hospital lacked adequate medical facilities for his client. They also contested the charge of unlawful assembly, asserting that the protest was lawful and within the demonstrators’ rights.

The state prosecutor, however, maintained that even if the assembly was lawful, the protesters committed unlawful acts during the events. They also refuted claims that the protesters were not provided food while in custody, stating that the police had been purchasing meals for them. The defense countered, claiming their clients received food only during transport to court.

Barker-Vormawor and fellow protester Fanny Otoo were absent from court on September 25 due to illness and were receiving treatment at the Police Hospital. Barker-Vormawor faces eight charges, including stealing, defacement of public notice, and offensive conduct conducive to a breach of the peace. The case has been adjourned until October 8.
