Fomena Member of Parliament and Second Deputy Speaker, Andrew Asiamah Amoako, is preparing to file a lawsuit against Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin for declaring his seat vacant. The announcement came from Alexander Afenyo-Markin, leader of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Caucus, during a press conference on October 18.
Speaker Bagbin declared the four seats vacant on the grounds that three MPs had switched to run as independent candidates in the upcoming elections. However, Asiamah contends he is seeking to contest on the NPP ticket as an independent candidate.
This marks the second time the Fomena seat has been declared vacant during Asiamah’s tenure, but this time, he risks losing his position as Deputy Speaker as well. With three NPP seats now declared vacant, the party finds itself in the minority with 135 seats, while the NDC holds the majority with 136.
In response to the Speaker’s ruling, Afenyo-Markin announced that the NPP caucus would boycott parliamentary proceedings until their Supreme Court case, which aims to challenge the Speaker’s decision, is resolved.
