STMA restates commitment to satisfying needs for Disability

Christiana Efua Quansah, the government appointee for persons with disabilities at the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly has reiterated the associations commitment to satisfying needs for Disability. Right for Persons with disability and to ensure that laws relating to PWDs are fully complied with. She stressed on the fact that urgent steps are required to counteract this problem; she pointed towards the fact that many an institution and organization have stopped paying any heed to law and there are no legal actions taken against them.

Similarly, the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly’s National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) has been reviewing a comprehensive disaster response plan in the context of Sekondi-Takoradi metropolis and closely analyzing the needs of PWDs that have to be met in the case of disaster.

Regulations and laws have been passed through the Persons with Disability Act, 2006 (Act 715) which state that MMDAs should provide barriers –free facilities in all public buildings to enhance the movement of disabled people but many of them have not complied to this. In response to this problem, NADMO now has a disaster risk reduction plan that incorporates concerns for the physically challenged in case of a disaster. This was highlighted by NADMO’s Public Relations Officer, Emma Akosua Boafo who pointed out that, this plan is a way of putting measures that would ensure that the efforts put in by the entity would be useful to the aim of responding to disasters.

Quansah maintained the association’s commitment to the demands for change of the Disabilities Act, as well as for its implementation. She insisted they will suffer penalties failing which the association has remained fully committed to the fight for the pinned down minorities; the PWDs.

Similarly, in the second regular meeting of the first session of the ninth STMA, Mayor Abdul Mumin Issah said that the assembly has provided a GH¢150,000 for equipment for persons with disabilities in the metropolis.
