Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has revealed that talks are planned to discuss Thomas Partey’s future, with the Ghanaian midfielder’s contract set to expire at the end of the current season.
After a 2023/24 campaign hampered by injuries, Partey has made a solid comeback this season, securing his place in Arsenal’s starting lineup for all their Premier League and Champions League matches to date. The 31-year-old has shown his adaptability, stepping in as a right-back when needed due to injuries to Ben White, Jurrien Timber, and Takehiro Tomiyasu, and taking on added responsibilities during captain Martin Ødegaard’s absence.
Despite speculation that Partey might leave last summer, especially after Arsenal signed Mikel Merino, transfer interest was limited, and he remained with the squad. Now, with his contract running out next summer, Partey’s future at Arsenal is uncertain. However, after consistent performances, Arteta hinted in Friday’s press conference that an extension could be possible.
“He [Partey] is only 31, and he’s in a really good place, so yes, we’ll have discussions,” Arteta commented.
Arsenal, who signed Partey for £45 million in 2020, will be hoping for another strong showing from him as they prepare to take on Newcastle United in Saturday’s early fixture at St. James’ Park. Partey has amassed 128 appearances since joining the Gunners, playing a crucial role in the team’s midfield and defense.
