Renowned Ghanaian highlife musician Kwabena Kwabena has reignited the long-running debate about whether true record labels exist in Ghana’s music industry.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Showbiz A-Z with Kwame Dadzie, the Adult Music hitmaker expressed skepticism about the notion that Ghana has established record labels.
When asked if he would consider signing with a Ghanaian label under favorable terms, Kwabena Kwabena responded with a rhetorical question: “Are there record labels in Ghana?” He then answered emphatically, “No, no, no. I am sorry, there is no record label in Ghana.”
His stance aligns with the views of many industry players who argue that most entities labeled as record labels in Ghana are, in reality, music management and promotional companies rather than fully-fledged record labels. According to him, these businesses may offer label-related services but do not operate as traditional record labels.
However, others counter this claim, arguing that the scale of a record label does not determine its legitimacy, as music businesses worldwide vary in size while still serving the same purpose.
Some well-known music companies often referred to as record labels in Ghana include RuffTown Records, Highly Spiritual Music, Lynx Entertainment, Black Avenue Musik, Mimlife Records, SarkCess Music, MicBurnerz Music, and Flip the Music, among others.
