Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has donated medical supplies worth GH₵300,000 to aid in the fight against cerebrospinal meningitis (CSM) and provide free medical care to affected individuals.

The donation includes 8,400 doses of Ceftriaxone injection, 1,600 doses of Reception injection, 2,100 units each of Ringers Lactate and Normal Saline, 12 packs of spinal needles, and 300 doses of Dexamethasone.

During the handing-over ceremony in Wa, Speaker Bagbin emphasized the importance of health, stating, “It’s your wealth, it’s your health. Any other thing is not yours.” He also reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the Upper West Caucus of MPs in addressing the outbreak.

Providing an update on the crisis, Dr. Damien Punguyire, Upper West Regional Director of Health Services, disclosed that all districts except Sissala West and Wa East have reported cases, with Lawra District experiencing the most recent outbreak.

Dr. Punguyire stressed that early detection and prompt treatment are crucial in saving lives.

“With this support, first from the Minister of Health and now from the Right Honorable Speaker, we will ensure that no more lives are lost,” he assured.

He noted that many of the initial fatalities resulted from delayed medical attention, particularly among individuals without active health insurance.

In response, the Ghana Health Service has made meningitis treatment free, while intensifying public awareness campaigns and training programs for healthcare workers to curb the spread of the disease.
